Tom McDonald, owner and operator, has been training dogs for more than twenty years. He developed a his own method of training. He began training his own dogs with the guidance of Ricahrd A. Wolters. Wolters is the well-known author of several dog training books such as Gun Dog, Water Dog, and Game Dog. Tom has also studied with other professional trainers such as Joe Letta from Rochester, NY.
Whether you just want an obedient house pet or a highly skilled hunting dog, Worthington Kennels is just the ticket.
McDonald puts great emphasis on obedience. "You must have obedience rock solid before you can move on to any other training, be it agility, show ring or hunting."
Worthington Kennels offers obedience help to many breeds. McDonald's passion is training hunting breeds, such as retrievers and waterfowl dogs, to become excellent hunting companions.
McDonald also states, "The key to training a dog is consistency, repetition and association. I've often heard it quoted that 'practice makes perfect' , but that is incorrect. Perfect practice makes perfect. You need to know the correct way to practice, because if you do something wrong to begin with, no matter how much you practice, you will still do it wrong".
McDonald has years of experience and has competed in field trials and hunt test with ribbons and titles for his dogs and his clients dogs up and down the East Coast.
Hunting with a well trained dog is an absolute pleasure! It adds an entirely new dimension to your hunting experience. "Would you hunt with a gun that only shoots once in awhile after you pull the trigger? Of course not! Then why would you hunt with a dog that only obeys or retrieves once in awhile."
